Valencia is back on sailing's grand stage. Nearly two decades after hosting the America's Cup, the Spanish city returns to top-flight racing with a three-year SailGP commitment running through 2028. For a venue with this much heritage, it feels overdue.
The America's Cup came here in 2007 and 2010 – the first time the Auld Mug had ventured to European waters – and the infrastructure built for those campaigns still stands. The Veles e Vents building and Marina Real transformed the port into a purpose-built sailing hub, and while those events carried their share of financial headaches and controversy (the 2010 multihull match was... divisive), Valencia proved it could deliver world-class racing.
The switch from Cádiz, which hosted four successful seasons, trades Atlantic swell for Mediterranean reliability. September should serve up Valencia's characteristic thermal breezes – the south-westerly Garbí and south-easterly Llebeig – along with low swell and temperatures around 30°C. Flat water and consistent sea breeze is a combination that suits the F50s nicely, though anyone expecting a guaranteed full-power venue should temper expectations. Similar Mediterranean stops have occasionally required light-wind configurations when the thermals don't cooperate.
Slotting in as event 10 of 13, Valencia arrives at a pivotal point in the season. Championship positions will be crystallising, pressure mounting, and the Spanish Season 4 champions will face the familiar weight of home expectation. Whether they can finally deliver a home victory remains the question – Spain's record on their own water has been curiously underwhelming given their global form.
