Emirates GBR “buzzing to be on home waters” for SailGP Portsmouth

Reigning SailGP champions Emirates GBR have lived “at the extremes of each end of results most weekends” this season, as Hannah Mills puts it.

In this video (link below), she and her fellow crew members reflect on the season so far and look ahead to their home race in Portsmouth on July 25/26.

As The Foil’s Andy Rice puts it, the British F50 has had the pace but not the consistency as the crew chase a second consecutive championship. Problems with the big wing have set them back – “just a few mistakes” as Stu Bithell puts it – while driver Dylan Fletcher admits to “operator error” in the training crash that ruled them out of racing in Halifax.

“The luxury of SailGP is you get to look at everyone else,” points out Mills as the team work to improve.

Andy quizzes Fletcher on how to make an F50 fly faster – but Dylan refuses to give up all his secrets! He also explains why he returns to his Moth when he can to “stay sharp”.

Meanwhile, the team work to bring on the next generation of sailors. Kai Hockley tells Andy about his ambitions to join the race crew and how the role of grinder is his preferred option.

Andy wraps up the video by summarising how “continuous improvement” is a running theme for Emirates GBR if that second title is to be won. As for Portsmouth at the end of July, Mills admits “we’re buzzing to be back home waters.”
